Aviation
Ken has had a lifelong passion for flying and almost the first task carried out after moving to the farm was to establish a 600m x 20m grass airstrip.
On the right you see our inaugural flight into Fen End Farm, using a stubble strip before the airstrip proper was ready. Our plane is a vintage ex-RAF 1952 DeHaviland Chipmunk, for spotters its civilian registration is G-BWMX, its service number was WG407. The Chipmunk was one of the most successful trainers in RAF service. The RAF still has two black Chipmunks in use by the Battle of Britain Memorial flight, these are used to reconnoitre for displays and to train pilots before going on to the Spitfire and Hurricane. The Chipmunk has very similar handling to a Spitfire and is often referred to as "the poor mans Spitfire"
Ken has also built an Avid Flyer (G-CURV) which he hopes to get airborne in 2009, this is a small 2 seat high wing monoplane not too dissimilar to a Piper Cub.
If you would like to visit us by air please phone for a briefing and look at these airfield notes. You can check our weather station for local conditions.
